STEAM is a way to teach how all things relate to each other, in school and in life. It’s more fun than traditional learning styles and makes more sense to all types of learners because it is based on the natural ways that people learn and are interested in things.
According to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for the past few years 2016-2018, the performance of students in mathematics and general science in particular has not been encouraging.
The WASSCE performance percentage for 2017 (General science A1-C6 43.66%, D7-E8 29.59%, F9 26.75% Mathematics A1-C6 42.73%, D7-E8 37%, F9 20.27%) and 2018 (General science A1-C6 50.52%, D7-E8 34.72%, F9 14.76% mathematics A1-C6 38.33%, D7-E8 30.09%, F9 31.58%) all show a 50% or less percentage pass in both Mathematics and General science.
The Minister of Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, at a workshop aimed at “Revamping Mathematics Education in Ghana through Transformation”, on in 2016, named poor teaching methodology, inadequate instructional materials, low understanding of test items, inadequate coverage of syllabus and poor communication skills as some reasons for low performance of students in subjects like mathematics and science.
To establish a positive perspective towards Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics in the society and to create a turning point in schools to encourage learning, critical thinking, inquiry and innovation through this approach.
KidCity Builds seeks to provide a fun way for children to experience, develop interests and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering the Arts and Mathematics. Through our program, the ability to create, solve problems, be imaginative will be developed and enhanced.
We use various techniques, including LEGO and MINDCRAFT to provide a fun way for young children to experience, develop interests and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering the Arts and Mathematics to encourage learning, critical thinking, inquiry and innovation.
