STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking—Susan Riley

OVERVIEW

STEAM is a way to teach how all things relate to each other, in school and in life. It’s more fun than traditional learning styles and makes more sense to all types of learners because it is based on the natural ways that people learn and are interested in things.
According to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for the past few years 2016-2018, the performance of students in mathematics and general science in particular has not been encouraging.
The WASSCE performance percentage for 2017 (General science A1-C6 43.66%, D7-E8 29.59%, F9 26.75% Mathematics A1-C6 42.73%, D7-E8 37%, F9 20.27%) and 2018 (General science A1-C6 50.52%, D7-E8 34.72%, F9 14.76% mathematics A1-C6 38.33%, D7-E8 30.09%, F9 31.58%) all show a 50% or less percentage pass in both Mathematics and General science.
The Minister of Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, at a workshop aimed at “Revamping Mathematics Education in Ghana through Transformation”, on in 2016, named poor teaching methodology, inadequate instructional materials, low understanding of test items, inadequate coverage of syllabus and poor communication skills as some reasons for low performance of students in subjects like mathematics and science.
